Writing Your Greatest Story: Memoir Classes |
|
All of us have at least one great story from our lives. It might be something major (when you met the love of your life, a historic event, when you left home, etc.), or something deceptively minor (learning to ride a bike, the concert that changed your life, a cooking lesson with a sibling, etc.). How do we write these stories? How can we not only write them, but also turn them into actual memoirs to share with others? All good writers start by writing what they know. For students new to writing, the course is a fresh opportunity to begun exploring personal experiences and history. For students who have already begun memoir work, this course can continue that endeavor and further focus it. As part of the class, students will explore their stories through guided memory work, detail exercises, outlining projects, sharing work, and more. Topics include the elements of successful memoirs, how to release memory, showing/not telling, how to deal with writer’s block, writing about difficult subjects, and exploring the significance of events. Class is structured to best benefit students, always keeping their interests and needs in mind. |

“I was completely overwhelmed about writing, but really wanted to leave my story behind for my grandchildren. In a very short time, [Bob] has been able to give me the confidence to tackle such a project.” “I’d like to mention my appreciation and respect. My experience has been nothing but positive and inspiring.” “Bob is very nurturing of fledgling writers.” “The strength of [this work is] encouraging us to document our history—not only for our families and friends, but for ourselves as well. It’s a self-enhancing experience to write our own stories.” “[He] is a remarkably able and sensitive teacher who knows his subject thoroughly. “ “[He] was an excellent instructor. He always treated his students with respect. His positivity really inspired me to do my best and made me leave class feeling truly fulfilled.” “Bob is very dedicated to the students. He is very caring and willing to make the class relevant.” |

For nearly fifteen years, I have taught writing at major universities, for lifelong learning organizations, and with private social groups. Now, my memoir classes are available in the greater Los Angeles area. I would value the opportunity to this writing course—”Writing Your Greatest Story”—to you. |

I have taught writing at the university level at schools including Arizona State University, Georgia State University, and (currently) UC Santa Barbara. I work closely with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where I teach memoir writing in a variety of formats. This work has been particularly fulfilling, as I have been able to help a wide variety of lifelong learners explore their personal stories to create memoirs and polish their autobiographies. As a Regents Scholar, I received my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Arizona State University. My writing has appeared in a variety of national journals; my book The Spider Sermons will be published in 2009. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you on your stories. |
